Spyro Laments Decline In Values, Says Youths Now Shun Handwork For Clout Chasing

Nigerian singer Spyro has decried the deteriorating state of celebrity influence and societal values, noting that music which once served as a tool for correcting social ills has lost its depth.

Speaking during an appearance on the Hardway Podcast, the artist recalled that public figures in the past, such as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, carried weight and wisdom whenever they spoke. He contrasted that era with the present, where he feels many celebrities lack substance despite being role models to younger generations.

Spyro expressed worry about the future of skilled trades in Nigeria, revealing that artisans including his mechanic have told him that young people no longer show interest in learning handwork. He warned that this trend could leave the country with a shortage of skilled technicians in the near future.

According to him, Nigerians may soon be forced to handle basic repairs themselves, from fixing cars to electrical and air conditioning works, because fewer apprentices are coming up to understudy experienced professionals.

The singer attributed the apathy towards vocational skills to a shift in mentorship, arguing that many youths now look up to individuals who make easy money by promoting foolishness and recklessness on social media, rather than those who earn a living through honest labour and talent.
