Turkish Delight In Germany: Oh Hyeon-gyu Brace Fires Besiktas To Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Hoffenheim

Besiktas secured a massive away victory in Germany on Thursday night, defeating TSG Hoffenheim 3-2 in a five-goal thriller in the UEFA Europa League. The result at the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim gives the Turkish giants two wins from two games and marks their best European start since the 2017/18 season.

The first half ended goalless despite chances at both ends. Hoffenheim came closest early on when Japanese defender Koki Machida headed against the post in the third minute, while Adam Hlozek missed the target after rounding the goalkeeper. Besiktas, who were backed by a large travelling support, grew into the game but failed to find a breakthrough before the interval.

The game exploded into life after the break. Besiktas broke the deadlock in the 60th minute through defender Amir Murillo, who scored his second goal in two European matches after converting from close range following good work by Leandro Trossard, Wilfred Ndidi and South Korean forward Oh Hyeon-gyu. The joy was short-lived as Hoffenheim hit back eight minutes later through Fisnik Asllani with a low strike into the left corner.

The night, however, belonged to Oh Hyeon-gyu. Introduced in place of Dusan Vlahovic, the South Korean international took charge of the contest. He restored Besiktas’ lead in the 72nd minute on the counter-attack after a brilliant pass from Junior Olaitan, finishing calmly past Oliver Baumann. Just seven minutes later, he struck again, sliding in to convert Ilhan Fakili’s low cross to make it 3-1.

Hoffenheim refused to give up and set up a tense finish when Machida headed home from Vladimir Coufal’s corner in the 88th minute. Despite late pressure, Besiktas held firm to claim all three points and leave the German side without a point after two games.

The performance was historic for manager Vincenzo Italiano, who became only the second coach in Besiktas history after Bernd Schuster in 2010 to win his first two group stage matches in Europe. Oh was named man of the match after being directly involved in all three goals with two goals and one assist.
