Senate Orders Full Probe Into Death Of Corps Member Etimbuk Daniel At Enugu NYSC Camp

The Senate has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps member, Etimbuk Daniel, at the Enugu State orientation camp and the general state of medical facilities in NYSC camps nationwide.

The resolution, passed on Thursday, followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey. Bassey described the late Daniel as a vibrant and patriotic young Nigerian who had just commenced national service, and warned that his death exposes serious gaps in healthcare delivery in orientation camps.

He argued that the incident reflects a recurring pattern of poor medical infrastructure, absence of qualified health personnel, and weak emergency referral systems across NYSC camps. Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, he stressed that the security and welfare of corps members remain the primary duty of government.

The investigation will be carried out jointly by the Senate Committees on Police Affairs, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Ethics and Public Petitions, Youth Development and Health, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services. The Senate also observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased after the motion was seconded by Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno.

Etimbuk Daniel, immediate past President of the Students’ Union Government of Akwa Ibom State University, was reported to have died after complaining of a headache at the camp. According to reports, he was administered drugs at the camp clinic but his condition worsened, and approval to transfer him to a hospital allegedly came too late.
