The circumstances surrounding the death of former Senator Bello Mandiya have been revealed in the Senate, showing he died alone in his Abuja residence after a domestic accident.
Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, recounted the incident during plenary on Tuesday. He said Mandiya, who represented Katsina South from 2019 to 2023, lived alone in Abuja and was last seen by a colleague around 11 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026.
According to Ningi, the former lawmaker was preparing to observe the Friday congregational prayer. He had laid out his cap and phones on his bed before going to take his bath, but slipped and hit his head as he stepped out of the bathroom.
His absence went unnoticed for three days. Concerns were only raised when the Chief Imam of Apo noticed that Mandiya, a regular attendee at the five daily prayers, had missed prayers for three consecutive days, while neighbours complained of a foul odour coming from his apartment.
Ningi said residents eventually forced the door open on Monday, September 7, and found his lifeless body in the bathroom. Describing the tragedy as a lesson on the fragility of life, Ningi noted that he was in Saudi Arabia when his son called to inform him of the death, and lamented that for 72 hours no one knew where Mandiya was.
