Presidency Confirms Delivery Of 500 CNG Stations In October As FG Targets 1,000 Nationwide

The Federal Government will take delivery of the first batch of 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations by the end of October 2026 as part of efforts to expand cleaner and cheaper fuel infrastructure across the country.

The Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), Ismael Ahmed, disclosed this on Saturday while speaking with Sunday PUNCH. He explained that another 500 stations would be ordered subsequently, bringing the total procurement under the programme to 1,000 stations.

The development follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu in August for the rollout of an additional 500 CNG stations nationwide, on top of the 500 earlier ordered by the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund. According to the Presidency, the expansion is aimed at helping Nigerians benefit from lower transport costs, especially for intra-state travel.

Ahmed noted that the stations are not off-the-shelf items, as they require building, shipping, installation and connection before deployment. He said the first batch has already been ordered and the process is underway, with arrival expected in late October.

He added that government will prioritise high-demand locations such as Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt, based on profiling of traffic volume and vehicle density. President Tinubu has said a joint Federal and State committee will drive implementation, with the goal that savings of 60 to 80 percent from CNG compared to petrol will translate into cheaper fares for Nigerians from October 1.
