Oyo/Osun Customs Impounds N900m Cannabis, Pistol, Mercury, Others Worth N4.1bn

The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, has announced the seizure of a large consignment of illicit drugs and other prohibited items including cannabis worth over N900 million, a pistol, hazardous mercury chemical and police camouflage materials.

Disclosing the seizures while briefing journalists in Ibadan on Thursday, the Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Wale Moses Adewole, said the operations were carried out in August across various locations in Oyo State. Among the items intercepted were 2,440 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, 48 packs of Tramadol, 10 containers of corrosive mercury chemical, one pistol, six pistol magazines, one pump-action magazine and 60 detonating cords.

The Command also impounded 573 crests of the Nigeria Police Force and 92 yards of police camouflage fabric, which Adewole said could be used for impersonation, unlawful access and other criminal activities. He added that the mercury chemical, described as “Corrosive 8 Mercury”, poses serious danger to lives and property if not properly handled, stored or transported.

Other contrabands seized include 2,012 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 550 bags of 25kg foreign rice, 1,150 used tyres, 101 used compressors, 450 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit, foreign vegetable oil, foreign sugar, used clothing, used shoes and used vehicles. The total duty-paid value of all seized items was estimated at N4.1 billion.

Adewole noted that beyond anti-smuggling operations, the Command recorded N65.66 billion in revenue between January and August 2026, representing a 13.88 percent increase from the N57.66 billion generated in the same period of 2025. He assured that the Command will sustain intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration to suppress smuggling while facilitating legitimate trade.
