The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that managing roaming cattle within Abuja does not fall under its official duties. According to a police spokesperson, officers will only step in when the animals are involved in an offense or cause destruction to property.
The statement was issued in response to growing public complaints about herds of cows wandering through major roads, estates, and business areas in the Federal Capital Territory. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about traffic disruptions and damage caused by the stray livestock.
The spokesperson explained that the primary responsibility for controlling and impounding stray animals lies with the relevant municipal and agricultural authorities in the FCT. The police, he noted, are not tasked with cattle herding or animal control operations.
However, the Force said it will intervene when there is a breach of law. Examples include cases where cows destroy farms, cause road accidents, or lead to clashes between herders and residents. In such instances, officers will respond to maintain order and enforce the law.
The clarification is aimed at helping the public understand which agency to contact for such issues. Authorities urged residents to channel complaints about roaming cattle to the appropriate FCT agencies, while the police will focus on cases that involve crime, damage, or public safety threats.
