The Taraba State Police Command has arrested two women suspected of abducting three young girls in Jalingo and trying to move them out of the state.
According to police sources, the suspects, both from a South-East state and unmarried, had rented accommodation in the same compound as the children’s families about two weeks earlier. On Thursday morning, they allegedly convinced the mothers to let the girls go with them to the market.
Instead of heading to the market, the women reportedly took the children to a motor park in Jalingo and hired a commercial vehicle to Adamawa State. During the journey, the driver grew suspicious because the women and the girls did not resemble each other. He alerted his union members, who then notified the police.
The vehicle was intercepted at a filling station and the two women were taken into custody alongside the children. At the station, the suspects reportedly admitted to deceiving the mothers and removing the girls from the compound where they lived.
The victims, identified as Ummul Shuaibu, Ummul Baba Gasal, and Amina Abubakar, are between 5 and 6 years old. One of the fathers, Abubakar Kwalli, said he and the other parents were summoned to the police headquarters to identify their children. Police said the girls would be released to their parents after their mothers also came forward for identification.
