Security forces in Borno State intercepted a group of 20 people with ties to Boko Haram as they attempted to flee the area. The individuals, mostly women and children, were reportedly escaping an attack by rival insurgents from ISWAP.
Military sources said the interception occurred during a routine operation in a part of the state affected by ongoing clashes between the two extremist groups. The troops acted after receiving intelligence about movement of civilians within the conflict zone.
According to officials, the group was fleeing heightened violence following an offensive launched by ISWAP against Boko Haram positions. The infighting between the factions has forced many families caught in the middle to abandon their camps in search of safety. The rescued persons are currently in military custody for profiling and further assessment.
Authorities said humanitarian agencies will be involved to provide medical care, food, and support as investigations continue. The army reiterated its commitment to protecting civilians trapped in the insurgency and urged residents in volatile areas to cooperate with security operatives. The situation in the region remains tense as both Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to battle for control.
