Wema Bank’s Profit Jumps 50% to N131.4 Billion on Strong Lending and Interest Earnings

Wema Bank delivered a strong first-half performance for 2026, posting a pre-tax profit of N131.4 billion. That represents a 50.1% year-on-year increase, driven mainly by higher interest income and growth in its loan book.

The surge in earnings came from the bank’s core lending business. Interest income climbed as Wema expanded credit to both retail and corporate customers. With interest rates staying elevated, the bank was able to earn more from loans while keeping funding costs relatively in check.Loan growth was another key factor.

The bank pushed more credit into productive sectors of the economy during the period, which boosted interest-earning assets. This expansion helped offset operating expenses and contributed directly to the bottom line.Management attributed the results to disciplined asset quality and digital-driven deposit mobilization. By growing low-cost deposits through its digital platforms, Wema was able to fund lending at better margins.

The strategy also supported fee and commission income, adding to overall profitability. With the H1 result, Wema Bank has set a solid base for the rest of the year. Analysts say if loan growth and interest margins hold, the bank could sustain the momentum into H2. Investors will be watching how the bank manages risk as it continues to grow its loan portfolio.
