Obasanjo Admits Choosing Atiku as Running Mate Was a Mistake, Says God Delivered Him

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reflected on one of the key decisions from his time in office, describing his selection of Atiku Abubakar as vice president as a misjudgment.

Speaking candidly, Obasanjo said the choice of Atiku to serve as his deputy when he assumed the presidency in 1999 was an error on his part. He acknowledged that the decision did not turn out as he had hoped.Despite calling it a mistake, the former president noted that he views it as a genuine one rather than one made with ill intent. According to him, the error was not deliberate.

Obasanjo also credited divine intervention for helping him navigate the challenges that followed that decision. He said God protected him and saw him through the difficulties that arose from the partnership. His remarks highlight the often turbulent relationship between both leaders during their eight years in office, a period marked by both governance achievements and well-documented political disagreements.
