Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has thrown his weight behind former Commissioner for Works, Mustapha Gubio, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement indicates a possible internal contest within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.The governor’s spokesperson, Malam Dauda Iliya, confirmed the decision on Tuesday.
He stated that Gubio is considered the most suitable candidate to maintain continuity and build upon the current administration’s developmental strides across Borno.
The move sets up a potential face-off with interests aligned to Vice President Kashim Shettima, whose preferred candidate was reportedly not endorsed by Zulum.
Political observers note that the development could intensify competition for the APC ticket as the 2027 elections draw closer.
