Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has introduced stringent measures to curtail fuel consumption across government operations in response to the prevailing fuel shortages and escalating prices.
These difficulties arise primarily from global energy market disruptions, including conflicts in the Middle East that have affected oil supply chains.
To demonstrate leadership, the President directed that senior officials accompanying her on official travels must now share a single bus instead of utilizing separate vehicles.
The directive was announced on April 8, 2026, during a swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed officials at Chamwino State House in Dodoma.
President Hassan specified that her core convoy would be limited to her personal vehicle, a police escort, and one backup security vehicle.
All other accompanying personnel would travel together in the designated bus, irrespective of their rank.
This initiative aims to set a precedent for other public institutions to adopt similar cost-saving strategies amid the economic strain.
By commencing these reforms within her own office, President Hassan underscored the urgency of fiscal prudence and collective responsibility in managing national resources.
The policy seeks to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs on public expenditure while promoting operational efficiency.
It reflects a broader commitment to prudent governance during a period of external economic challenges, encouraging government-wide adherence to measures that conserve fuel and reduce unnecessary vehicle deployment.
