Ugandan Electric Bus Manufacturer Secures Major Export Contract with South African Operator

A South African transport company has entered into a significant agreement with Uganda’s Kiira Motors Corporation for the supply of 450 electric buses.

The vehicles in question are the locally manufactured Kayoola E-Coach models, produced at the company’s facility in Jinja. This transaction represents a notable milestone for Uganda’s emerging electric vehicle industry and underscores growing regional cooperation in sustainable transport solutions.

The deal was concluded following the successful completion of an extensive demonstration journey, during which a Kayoola E-Coach covered more than 13,000 kilometres across multiple African countries.

The expedition served to validate the buses’ reliability, efficiency, and suitability for diverse operating conditions, thereby building confidence among potential buyers. In addition to the buses themselves, the agreement encompasses the provision of necessary charging infrastructure to support fleet operations.

Industry sources indicate that the initial order of 450 units could expand to as many as 820 buses in the future, potentially increasing the overall value and scope of the partnership.

This development highlights the growing momentum for electric mobility across the continent and positions Kiira Motors as a key player capable of delivering homegrown, environmentally friendly public transport solutions to regional markets.
