Four Days in Captivity: Enugu Victim Details Ambush by Armed Fulani Gang on Ugwogo-Opi-Nsukka Highway

A survivor of a kidnapping along the Ugwogo-Opi-Nsukka Road in Enugu State has shared a detailed account of his traumatic experience, highlighting the tactics used by criminal groups in the region.

The victim, referred to as Peter, was taken on November 29, 2025, around 5 p.m., shortly after passing a police checkpoint near the Ugwogo Roundabout while traveling from Nsukka to Enugu.

He endured four days in captivity before being released.Peter described the abductors as a group of 11 individuals of Fulani descent, equipped with four AK-47 rifles along with machetes, axes, and hoes.

Their leader stood out as calm and commanding, proficient in multiple languages including English, Pidgin English, Fulfulde, and Igbo. The gang frequently relocated their camp to avoid security forces, compelling victims to transport their supplies during these movements.

Drawing from his ordeal, Peter urged travelers to exercise extreme caution on this route, noting its particular danger in the late afternoon and evening hours. He recommended using the road only between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., when nearby farming activities may deter attacks.

He also pointed out that vehicles traveling toward Enugu from Nsukka face higher risks, as the criminals’ hideouts are positioned along the right side of the roadway, allowing them to set up ambushes effectively.
