China Executes Former Huarong Executive Bai Tianhui for $156 Million Bribery Scandal

China carried out the death sentence of Bai Tianhui, a former senior executive at China Huarong International Holdings Ltd., after he was found guilty of accepting bribes worth more than $156 million. The execution took place in Tianjin, marking the latest step in the country’s ongoing crackdown on high‑level corruption.

Bai, who had served as a manager at the state‑owned financial conglomerate, used his position to solicit and receive illicit payments between 2014 and 2018. Court officials described the sum as “exceptionally large” and said his actions caused significant damage to state interests.

The case was part of a broader anti‑graft campaign that has intensified in recent years, targeting senior figures in the financial sector. Authorities have emphasized that no one is above the law, regardless of rank or affiliation.

Previously, the former chairman of Huarong’s parent company, Lai Xiaomin, was also executed for similar offenses, underscoring the government’s tough stance on corruption within state enterprises.

The execution sends a clear message that large‑scale bribery will be met with the harshest penalties, as Beijing seeks to restore confidence in its financial institutions and demonstrate its commitment to clean governance.
