The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has successfully passed the second reading of a bill seeking to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act.
The proposed legislation aims to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Idah, Kogi State, thereby expanding access to tertiary healthcare services in the region.
The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Medical Centres Act,” was sponsored by Distinguished Senator Isah Jibrin (Echocho), representing Kogi East Senatorial District.
It received broad support during the debate, with senators underscoring the urgent need for improved medical infrastructure in the area.
During the second reading, contributors highlighted the strategic importance of locating a federal medical facility in Idah, citing the town’s central position within Igala land and its potential to serve as a healthcare hub for Kogi East and neighbouring communities.
The debate also emphasised the current strain on existing federal medical facilities and the necessity of decentralising specialised care.
Following the conclusion of the debate, the Senate President put the question to a voice vote, and the bill scaled the second reading without opposition.
It has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Health for further legislative action, including public hearings and clause-by-clause consideration.
