Lamine Yamal Rejects Messi Comparisons: “I Want My Own Path”

Lamine Yamal has firmly distanced himself from constant comparisons to Lionel Messi, insisting he is determined to carve out his own unique career path rather than emulate the Barcelona and Argentina icon.

In an interview with CBS, the 17-year-old winger expressed profound respect for Messi while making it clear that neither he nor the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner sees him as a mere successor or copy.

“I want my own path, not Messi’s,” Yamal stated, underlining his ambition to create his own legacy at the club.

The teenage sensation also revealed that his primary motivation is to bring joy to supporters, saying he plays to ensure fans “go home happier.” He credited his grounded upbringing for his ability to handle intense scrutiny and pressure at such a young age without it affecting his performances.

Yamal could face Messi on the pitch for the first time at senior international level in the 2026 Finalissima, should Spain and Argentina both qualify, setting the stage for a highly anticipated encounter between the prodigy and the legend he is so often compared to.
