Katsina: 37 Abducted Residents Freed in Bakori LGA Amid Growing Concerns Over Bandit Peace Deals

On Saturday afternoon, the Chairman of Bakori Local Government Area, Hon. Abubakar Barde, together with the member representing Bakori in the Katsina State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulrahman Kandarawa, formally received 37 residents who had been abducted from Yan Ganjar, Alhazawa, and Karma communities.

The 37 victims, including women and children, were released following prolonged negotiations between community leaders and the armed criminal groups responsible for their captivity.

Emotional reunions marked their return as families in the affected villages welcomed them home after weeks and, in some cases, months in captivity.

While the safe return of the victims has brought widespread relief across the area, it has also reignited public debate about the state government’s reliance on dialogue with armed bandits.

Several residents and observers have openly questioned whether repeated peace agreements and reported financial settlements with criminal elements encourage further abductions rather than deter them.

Many are demanding greater transparency on the terms of these arrangements and asking whether the current approach can deliver durable security rather than temporary respite.

As Governor Dikko Radda continues his ongoing statewide tour of local government areas, pressure is mounting for an official, comprehensive statement on the administration’s policy toward negotiations with bandits.

Citizens and civil society groups are calling for a clearly defined strategy that balances the immediate need to secure the release of hostages with stronger measures to prevent future attacks and hold perpetrators accountable.
