TikTok’s 2025 Nigeria Safety Crackdown: 49,512 Live Streams Shut Down and Millions of Videos Removed

TikTok disclosed at the West Africa Safety Summit in Dakar that it terminated 49,512 live‑stream broadcasts in Nigeria between April and June 2025. The shutdowns were part of an expanded safety campaign intended to shield users from harmful material, particularly streams that contravened the platform’s live‑monetization guidelines.

TikTok noted that the majority of these problematic sessions were intercepted before any viewers could access them, highlighting the company’s proactive moderation approach. In the same three‑month period, the platform removed 3.78 million videos from Nigerian accounts, with 98.7 % of those deletions occurring before any user flagged them and 91.9 % being taken down within 24 hours.

On a global scale, TikTok acted against 2.3 million live sessions and issued penalties to 1 million creators for violating live‑monetization rules, illustrating the breadth of its enforcement efforts.

The company emphasized that its safety measures are customized for local environments through close cooperation with West African policymakers, regulators, and civil‑society organizations.

It highlighted the #SaferTogether initiative as a central mechanism for fostering a unified and transparent digital‑safety framework across the region, reinforcing its commitment to curbing abusive or deceptive behavior in real time.
