DSS Charges 27‑Year‑Old Activist with Six Counts of Incitement Over Coup‑Call Posts

The Department of State Services has brought a six‑count indictment against 27‑year‑old Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume for content he posted on his verified X account (@theagroman) in October 2025.

In the posts, he urged the military to topple the All Progressives Congress administration and to remove President Bola Tinubu, even writing that “a coup in Nigeria is needed.

Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government and join the AES.” The DSS interpreted these messages as incitement and a threat to public order. The charge sheet was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025.

It accuses Onukwume of violating Sections 46 A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2024 (as amended).

The counts allege that he deliberately published the remarks to provoke fear, alarm, annoyance, and criminal intimidation against the government.Onukwume was arrested in Oyigbo, Port Harcourt, after DSS analysts monitored his online activity, and he is expected to be arraigned before the end of the week.

Authorities say the suspect is cooperating with investigators. The case has ignited a vigorous discussion on social media regarding the balance between national security and freedom of expression.

The agency’s action underscores its commitment to preventing speech that could destabilize the state, while the broader public debate continues over how far such restrictions should extend. The outcome of the court proceedings will likely shape future interpretations of online incitement laws in Nigeria.
