Jonathan Has Bad Records – Presidency

The Nigerian Presidency has weighed in on former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential bid for the 2027 elections, stating that while he is eligible to run, his “dismal record in office” will likely be fresh in the minds of voters. According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Jonathan’s administration was marred by fiscal irresponsibility, corruption, and waste, particularly during a period of unprecedented oil windfalls.

Onanuga highlighted that despite inheriting $66 billion in reserves and $20 billion in the Excess Crude Account in 2010, Jonathan’s administration left only $30 billion in reserves and a mere $2 billion in the Excess Crude Account by 2015.

In contrast, President Tinubu’s administration has made significant economic strides, with foreign reserves rising to $42 billion, inflation easing to 20.12%, and a 4.23% GDP growth rate in Q2 2025.

The Presidency dismissed the idea of Jonathan’s candidacy as a viable option, citing his inability to manage security funds and widespread insecurity during his tenure. Onanuga emphasized that Nigerians will not easily forget Jonathan’s track record and are unlikely to support his return to office.

Meanwhile, some northern politicians are reportedly exploring alternative options, including potentially backing Jonathan as a “bridge candidate” to disrupt President Tinubu’s momentum. However, Jonathan’s eligibility to run has been questioned due to a 2018 law limiting the number of terms a president can serve.

According to this law, a vice president or deputy governor who succeeds a president and serves out their term can only run for the office once more. Given Jonathan’s past service as president, this law may effectively bar him from contesting in 2027.
