Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President, has thrown his hat into the ring, declaring his intention to run for president in the 2027 general election. At 78 years old, with a history of six presidential bids, Atiku remains determined to lead Nigeria, emphasizing the need for decisive action to rescue the country from its current state of decline.
He likened Nigeria’s situation to being in an “intensive care unit,” citing pervasive poverty, pain, and anguish as evidence of the country’s dire need for change.Atiku’s decision comes amid growing discontent with the current administration, which he claims has failed to address the nation’s problems. Through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Tunde Olusunle, Atiku stated that Nigeria’s degeneration, coupled with unprecedented theft and lack of accountability, is unacceptable.
He expressed his commitment to leading efforts to reclaim and reconstruct the country, emphasizing the need for a new direction. The former Vice President’s announcement has sparked interest in the 2027 presidential race, with other notable figures like ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi expressing interest in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.
Atiku, however, remains confident that his coalition will shock the world in 2027, predicting a significant upset in the elections.Atiku’s determination to run for president in 2027 is unwavering, despite speculation about his potential withdrawal. He disowned comments made by Professor Ola Olateju, who represented him at a political event, suggesting that Atiku’s goal was to build a better Nigeria rather than seeking the presidency at all costs.
Atiku clarified that Olateju’s statement was unauthorized and did not reflect his views. As Atiku prepares for another presidential bid, he faces significant challenges, including his advanced age and the task of uniting Nigerians behind his vision for change. Nevertheless, he remains resolute in his determination to lead Nigeria towards a better future, promising to address the country’s systemic issues and restore values and accountability to governance.
