The motion was prompted by the incessant attacks and killings in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State, allegedly perpetrated by suspected herdsmen. The Senate has urged security agencies to take immediate action to restore law and order in the affected areas.

The Senate’s resolutions also included a call on the National Emergency Management Agency and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide relief materials to affected communities. Furthermore, the Senate urged the Benue State Government to enforce the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law to restore peace in the state.

The Senate’s committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, Livestock Development, and Agriculture have been mandated to visit Gwer-West Local Government Area for an on-the-ground assessment of the situation.

The rising insecurity in Nigeria has become a major concern for citizens, with many calling for urgent action from the government. The Senate’s move to summon the security chiefs is seen as a step in the right direction, as it aims to hold those responsible for national security accountable.
