NAFDAC has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against counterfeit and expired drugs, uncovering a massive depot in Abia State. The depot, located in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa area, was found to be dealing in expired and falsified drugs, posing a significant health risk to consumers. The operation was being run from multiple buildings near the Ariaria International Market, indicating a large-scale illegal operation.
The seized items included expired potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments. Shockingly, machines used to rebrand and alter expiry dates were also discovered on-site. This suggests that the perpetrators were attempting to deceive consumers into buying expired and potentially deadly drugs.
The raid led to the arrest of several individuals associated with the operation, although the prime suspect remains at large.NAFDAC’s operation is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to crack down on the circulation of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria.
The agency has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating the distribution of substandard and falsified drugs in the country. In fact, NAFDAC is currently reviewing its laws to impose stricter penalties on individuals and organizations involved in the production and distribution of dangerous pharmaceutical products.
