Spanish football icon Pedro Rodriguez has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, bringing an end to a remarkable 20-year career.
The former Barcelona, Chelsea, Roma and Lazio winger made the announcement on Wednesday via a heartfelt statement on social media. A free agent since his contract with Lazio expired in July, Pedro said he felt the time was right to begin a new chapter, expressing pride for living his dream and gratitude to football for all the joy it gave him.
Pedro rose to prominence after breaking into Barcelona’s first team in 2008, becoming a key figure under Pep Guardiola during one of the club’s most dominant eras. He scored 99 goals in 321 games for the Catalan giants, winning 20 major trophies including five La Liga titles and three Champions League titles, and famously scored in the 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United.
His illustrious journey continued in England with Chelsea, where he won the Premier League in 2017, the FA Cup and the Europa League, before moving to Italy for spells with AS Roma and Lazio, where he spent his final five seasons and made over 200 appearances.
On the international stage, Pedro was part of Spain’s golden generation, earning 65 caps and scoring 17 goals. He started in the 2010 World Cup final victory over the Netherlands and also lifted the Euro 2012 trophy. In total, he played 794 club games, scoring 197 goals, and will be remembered as one of the most decorated and reliable wingers of his generation.
