Former President Olusegun Obasanjo lightened the mood at the 60th birthday celebration of the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, with a playful remark about future milestones.
Speaking at the event, the 89-year-old elder statesman said he was delighted to be present for the monarch’s 60th birthday. He then joked about attending the next decade celebrations.
“I’m here with you today for your 60th. By God’s grace I will be here again for your 70th in 10 years’ time,” Obasanjo told the gathering to laughter and applause.
He, however, drew the line at the 80th. Pointing out that it would be 20 years from now, he said in Yoruba, _“ẹ yonda mi”_ — meaning “you’ll excuse me.” He added that the monarch could mark that one “the way it pleases you.”
Obasanjo’s comments drew cheers from guests, who described the exchange as a blend of humor, warmth and respect. The birthday ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, dignitaries and well-wishers who came to celebrate Oba Obalanlege’s life and reign.
