The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo, has challenged the decision of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to halt NURTW operations in the state.
On Thursday, Governor Adeleke directed an immediate suspension of all NURTW activities across motor parks in Osun. The order was aimed at addressing concerns around the union’s activities in the state.Reacting to the directive, MC Oluomo said no governor has the constitutional backing to shut down the union’s operations.
According to him, the NURTW is a federally recognized body and its affairs are guided by national statutes, not state fiat.He argued that while state governments can ensure law and order in parks, they cannot unilaterally proscribe or suspend a registered national union. MC Oluomo maintained that such matters must follow due process and engagement with the union’s national leadership.
The NURTW president called for dialogue between the Osun government and the union to resolve any issues, stressing that a ban would only disrupt transportation and the livelihoods of members. He urged all parties to respect the rule of law while working toward peace in the state’s motor parks.
