Roman Abramovich Prepares Legal Challenge Against UK Government Over Frozen Chelsea Sale Proceeds

Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, is preparing to initiate legal proceedings against the United Kingdom government in an effort to access approximately €2.3 billion in proceeds from the club’s sale in 2022.

These funds have remained frozen in British bank accounts due to ongoing sanctions and disputes arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to recent reports, Abramovich seeks to establish a new charitable foundation to oversee the distribution of the money on a global scale for humanitarian purposes.

The proposed foundation aims to support victims of conflict worldwide, rather than restricting the allocation exclusively to Ukraine.

This position has created a significant impasse, as the UK government insists that the entire sum must be directed solely toward aiding Ukraine and its affected population.

As a result, the funds continue to be held in limbo, preventing any disbursement despite the passage of several years since the transaction. This development reflects a deepening disagreement between the parties involved.

Abramovich’s representatives have indicated a willingness to contest any governmental attempt to seize or redirect the assets through the courts, emphasizing ownership and control over the proposed charitable vehicle.

The situation remains fluid, with regulatory bodies such as the UK Charity Commission reviewing related applications, while the government maintains its firm stance on the designated use of the resources.
