NNPC Ltd Introduces New Cawthorne Crude Grade with Maiden Export of 950,000 Barrels to the Netherlands

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has introduced a new crude oil grade known as Cawthorne, marking a significant development in the country’s petroleum sector.

This light, sweet crude blend, characterized by an API gravity of 36.4, is designed to enhance Nigeria’s overall crude oil production and diversify its export offerings in the international market. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s position as a key global oil supplier.

In its inaugural shipment, NNPC Ltd successfully exported approximately 950,000 barrels of the Cawthorne blend to Europe, with the cargo destined for the Netherlands.

The consignment was loaded from the newly operational Cawthorne Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel, situated offshore Bonny in Rivers State.

This milestone underscores advancements in crude evacuation infrastructure and operational efficiency within Nigeria’s upstream petroleum industry.

Industry stakeholders view the launch of the Cawthorne grade as a strategic step toward expanding Nigeria’s portfolio of competitive crude streams, comparable in quality to established blends such as Bonny Light.

The move is expected to attract greater interest from international refiners seeking high-yield feedstocks for premium petroleum products.

Overall, it contributes to broader objectives of increasing output and optimizing revenue generation from Nigeria’s hydrocarbon resources.
