Renowned Pan-Africanist and legal scholar, Professor PLO Lumumba, has called on the leadership of the African Union to take immediate action to address the ongoing conflict in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia.
Lumumba specifically appealed to the Chairman of the African Union, President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, and the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, to convene an emergency meeting of the continental body. He said the meeting should focus on finding urgent and lasting solutions to the crisis.
According to him, the situation in Tigray requires swift intervention before it spirals into a larger humanitarian disaster. He warned that if left unchecked, the conflict could escalate and destabilize not only Ethiopia but the wider Horn of Africa region.
The professor stressed that the African Union has a responsibility to live up to its mantra of African solutions to African problems. He noted that proactive engagement and dialogue remain the most effective tools to stop the violence and restore peace in the troubled region.
Lumumba further urged all Africans of goodwill, both on the continent and in the diaspora, to lend their voices to the call for peace. He maintained that collective pressure and solidarity are needed to compel relevant authorities to act and end the suffering of civilians in Tigray.
