North Korea has fired a ballistic missile towards the sea, South Korea’s military has confirmed. The launch adds to the series of missile tests carried out by Pyongyang in recent months.

According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile was launched from North Korean territory and landed in waters off its eastern coast. Details regarding the type and range of the missile are still being analyzed.

The launch has heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with Seoul and its allies closely monitoring the situation. Japan also confirmed it detected the projectile and said it did not enter its territorial waters.

North Korea has defended its missile programme as necessary for self-defence, while the United States, South Korea and Japan have condemned the tests as violations of UN Security Council resolutions. The repeated launches have raised concerns about regional stability.

Military authorities in South Korea said they remain on high alert and are maintaining full readiness in coordination with the United States to respond to any further provocations from the North.
