Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have stopped members of the public from drinking beer that spilled onto the road after a truck crash at Abalti Barracks, inward Ojuelegba, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning and involved a Fuso truck loaded with crates of beer, two Jeeps identified as a Lexus with plate number LXR 960JS and a Hyundai with KTU 12JS, and a dispatch motorcycle with number AAA 151QT. According to LASTMA’s Public Relations Officer, Adebayo Taofiq, the truck driver was on high speed and attempted to avoid hitting a vehicle ahead of him. He failed to brake in time, swerved, knocked down the dispatch rider and then collided with the two vehicles.
The dispatch rider sustained serious injuries and was rescued by LASTMA personnel before being taken for medical attention. Police officers from the area and LASTMA officials were immediately deployed to manage traffic and secure the accident scene, while officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) were called to clear broken bottles and debris.
However, the crash took a different turn after crates of beer fell off the truck and scattered across the roadway. Eyewitnesses and viral videos showed commuters and passersby rushing to pick up unbroken bottles and drinking directly from them at the scene, despite the presence of broken glass and safety risks.
LASTMA said its operatives intervened to stop the crowd and prevent further health hazards and traffic disruption. The agency later confirmed that all affected vehicles had been removed from the road and the carriageway cleared, restoring free flow of traffic along the axis.
