Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has taken the state’s elderly support programme to the Badagry Division, providing financial assistance and food items to senior citizens.
The outreach covered Badagry Central Local Government Area, Badagry West Local Council Development Area and Olorunda LCDA. According to a statement issued by the state government on Monday, Sanwo-Olu said the initiative was designed to ensure that older citizens continue to feel valued, included and appreciated for their contributions to society.
Speaking during the visit, the First Lady noted that growing old should not mean being forgotten by the society they helped to build. She described Badagry as a community with rich history and deep cultural heritage, whose people remain an important part of the Lagos story. She stressed that the programme was not just about cash and food, but about showing love, respect and dignity to the elderly.
She recalled that the first phase of the programme in the Badagry Division started on July 29 with visits to senior citizens in Ori-Ade, Amuwo-Odofin and Ojo, where beneficiaries received similar support. Sanwo-Olu also commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her Renewed Hope Initiative which also caters to the welfare of the elderly across the country.
The First Lady disclosed that the visitation programme has already covered the Lagos, Ikorodu and Epe divisions, with Badagry now added, leaving Ikeja as the only division yet to be reached. She urged families, community leaders, religious bodies and youth groups to continue to care for elderly people around them and not leave their welfare to government alone.
