Lionel Messi has done it again. The Argentine legend secured the 49th trophy of his extraordinary career as Inter Miami defeated Mexican champions Cruz Azul 2-0 to lift the Campeones Cup at Chase Stadium in Miami on Wednesday night.
It was a night of double history. Messi opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a rare diving header from a Luis Suarez cross to bring up his 100th goal in just 115 appearances for Inter Miami. The milestone was poetic, coming against the same club he scored his first Miami goal against with a stoppage-time free kick on his debut in July 2023. He then turned provider in the 81st minute, delivering a corner that Casemiro headed home to seal the victory.
The win is Inter Miami’s fifth trophy since Messi’s arrival three years ago, following the Leagues Cup in 2023, Supporters’ Shield in 2024, and Eastern Conference Championship and MLS Cup in 2025. It is also the club’s first Campeones Cup title, levelling the all-time series between MLS and Liga MX at four wins apiece in the annual clash of league champions.
At 39 years old, Messi’s collection continues to defy belief and stretches his record as the most decorated player in football history. His cabinet now includes 10 La Liga titles, 4 Champions Leagues, 2 Copa Americas, a World Cup, Finalissima, Olympic gold, 2 Ligue 1 crowns, and since moving to America, Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, MLS Cup, Eastern Conference and now the Campeones Cup.
As co-owner David Beckham said after the final whistle, there is no one else at 39 still deciding finals, just two months after captaining Argentina to the World Cup final. 49 trophies, 100 Miami goals, and as Messi showed with his leap over Willer Ditta for the header, still counting.
