The Federal Capital Territory Administration has kicked off a two-week campaign to vaccinate pets against rabies across Abuja.
Officials said the exercise is targeting 20,000 dogs and cats in communities within the FCT. The goal is to curb the spread of rabies and protect both animal and human health.
Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can be transmitted through bites and scratches. The FCTA noted that mass vaccination is one of the most effective ways to break the transmission cycle and reduce public health risks.
Veterinary teams will be deployed to designated centers and outreach points throughout the territory. Pet owners are being urged to bring their dogs and cats for free vaccination during the campaign window.
The administration emphasized that preventing outbreaks requires collective action. Residents were advised to keep pets immunized, avoid contact with stray animals, and report suspected cases to veterinary authorities immediately.
