Hamzat Links Lagos Waste Crisis to Rising Population Influx

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has attributed the growing volume of waste across Lagos to the continuous influx of people into the state.

Speaking during a recent engagement, Hamzat said the city’s population keeps expanding daily as Nigerians from other states move in for economic opportunities. According to him, this surge directly puts pressure on the state’s waste management systems, leading to the piles of refuse seen in several areas.

He explained that Lagos generates far more waste than many other states combined because of its status as Nigeria’s commercial hub. With more residents comes more consumption, and ultimately more garbage that must be collected, processed, and disposed of daily.

The Deputy Governor noted that the government is working to scale up infrastructure, expand landfill capacity, and partner with private waste operators to cope with the demand. He also called for better citizen participation, urging residents to embrace proper waste disposal and recycling habits to reduce the burden.

Hamzat stressed that while migration to Lagos cannot be stopped, sustainable solutions are needed to manage the environmental impact. He added that without collective responsibility from both government and residents, the challenge of waste will continue to outpace current efforts.
