President Bola Tinubu has mandated a sweeping reform of football administration in Nigeria. The directive comes on the heels of recent changes within the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.
According to a statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President approved the overhaul to address Nigeria’s consistent struggles in qualifying for major competitions.
The administration said the goal is to end the cycle of underperformance at regional, continental, and global tournaments. Tinubu noted that football remains a unifying force and a source of national pride, and it must be managed with greater accountability and professionalism.
Key areas targeted in the reform include governance, grassroots development, funding, and technical capacity. The President charged stakeholders to implement structures that will produce sustainable results and restore Nigeria’s standing in international football.
Government officials are expected to work with the NFF, sports ministry, and other partners to roll out the new framework in the coming weeks. The Presidency emphasized that the reforms are aimed at building a system that delivers long-term success for Nigerian football.
