Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, says his administration is currently servicing a huge debt burden left behind by previous governments. He disclosed that the state pays about ₦6.7 billion every month to cover loan obligations.
Speaking on the state’s finances, the governor explained that the monthly deduction is for debts inherited before he assumed office in May 2023. He noted that the payments cover both principal and interest on various loans contracted by past administrations.
Despite the heavy repayment schedule, Governor Sani said his government has not taken any new loans since it came in. According to him, the decision was deliberate to avoid adding to the state’s liabilities and to create room for prudent management of resources.
He added that even with the deductions, his administration has continued to fund key projects in education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure. The governor attributed this to blocking leakages, improving Internally Generated Revenue, and prioritizing spending.
Governor Sani assured residents that efforts are ongoing to reduce the debt burden over time. He said the focus remains on delivering people-centered projects while maintaining fiscal discipline and ensuring Kaduna does not rely on fresh borrowing.
