Akwa Ibom Bans Use of Ambulances for Transporting Corpses, Cites Health Risks

The Akwa Ibom State Government has prohibited the use of ambulances to carry dead bodies for burial. Authorities say the practice poses serious public health concerns and undermines the purpose of emergency medical vehicles.

According to officials, ambulances are meant to save lives, not convey remains. Using them to transport corpses increases the risk of contamination, exposes emergency responders to avoidable hazards, and can delay response times for patients in critical condition.

To enforce the directive, the government announced that any ambulance found violating the ban will be impounded immediately. Vehicle owners and operators could also face further sanctions under state health and transport regulations.

Health authorities noted that proper procedures already exist for moving deceased persons, including the use of mortuary vans and other approved vehicles. They urged funeral service providers and families to comply in order to protect public health and maintain the integrity of emergency services.

The government said the measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state. Residents have been advised to report any misuse of ambulances to the appropriate agencies for prompt action.
