Yaya Touré Makes History as First African Head Coach to Reach UCL Group stage

Ivory Coast icon Yaya Touré has written his name into European football history. The former midfielder guided Slovan Bratislava into the UEFA Champions League group phase, becoming the first African to achieve the feat as a head coach.

The Slovak champions sealed qualification on Wednesday night with a dramatic 2-1 victory over NK Celje after extra time. The decisive second-leg clash was played at Arena Z’dežele, where Slovan had to dig deep to overturn the pressure from the Slovenian side.

That result gave Bratislava a 3-2 win across both legs of the final qualifying round. After a tight first encounter, the return match turned into a tense, back-and-forth contest that was only settled in extra time. The team held its nerve to complete the job.

Touré, who enjoyed a glittering playing career at Barcelona and Manchester City, has now made an immediate impact in management. His tactical approach and leadership were key as Slovan navigated three qualifying rounds to reach Europe’s premier competition.

The milestone is significant for African coaching on the global stage. With Touré leading Bratislava into the group draw, he sets a new benchmark and opens the door for more African managers to be trusted at the highest level of club football.
