The Chairman of Agege Local Government Area has formally opened the 2026 Obasa Summer Games, flagging off what is expected to be one of the biggest grassroots football tournaments in the LGA this year.
The competition is strictly for players under 16 and was created to scout emerging football talent from Agege and its neighboring communities. More than just a tournament, organizers say the games are also a platform for social cohesion, giving teenagers a constructive way to spend their holidays while fostering unity across the wards.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Agege Stadium, the council chairman said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to youth empowerment. “Sports is a powerful tool for development. Through this tournament, we are keeping our young people engaged, teaching them discipline, and opening doors for those who can go pro,” he stated. He added that past editions have produced players who went on to join academies and state teams.
This year’s edition will feature teams representing all the political wards in Agege, with matches scheduled over several weeks. Beyond the football, the program includes mentorship sessions, health talks, and fair-play awards to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and community pride. Local coaches, referees, and sports officials have also been engaged to ensure proper organization and talent identification throughout the games.
The chairman called on parents, school authorities, and community leaders to support the young athletes and ensure they remain focused and disciplined. He reiterated that the council will continue to invest in sports infrastructure and youth programs as part of broader efforts to drive growth and reduce idleness among teenagers in Agege.
