A civil group has called on the 19 presidential candidates recognized by INEC to publicly declare their assets and liabilities ahead of the 2027 election.
The demand includes disclosures for spouses and unmarried children under 18, as well as clear explanations of how any major wealth was acquired. The organization also urged all contenders to openly reject vote-buying and electoral bribery. They asked candidates to direct their parties, campaign teams, agents, and supporters not to give out money, gifts, or any form of inducement in exchange for votes.
Among those listed are President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Peter Obi of the NDC, Senator Sandy Onor of the PDP, Omoyele Sowore of the AAC, and 14 others across various parties.According to the group, seeking the presidency means accepting a higher standard of transparency.
Anyone asking Nigerians for control over public funds, natural resources, appointments, and security should be ready to subject their personal finances to public scrutiny before campaigning for votes.
The statement added that the 2027 polls should be decided on policy, competence, character, and vision, not on who spends the most. Voluntary disclosure before the election, it argued, would help voters identify conflicts of interest, build trust in the process, and create a benchmark to measure any changes in wealth if a candidate wins. The group said this is an opportunity for political leaders to prove that public office is a public trust, not private property.
