The Federal Government has set aside N219 billion for Nigeria’s postponed national population and housing census. The allocation covers the period from 2021 to 2026, even though the exercise has faced repeated delays and is yet to hold. Officials say the funding is meant to ensure proper preparation whenever a new date is announced.
The census, which was originally scheduled for 2023, has been pushed back several times due to funding, logistics, and security concerns. Despite the postponement, government says planning and procurement activities have continued in the background.
According to budget documents, the N219bn will go toward personnel training, data collection tools, technology infrastructure, and public sensitization.
The National Population Commission is expected to oversee the spending and implementation when the exercise finally takes place.Stakeholders have continued to call for a firm date, noting that up-to-date population data is critical for planning in health, education, and infrastructure. Government maintains that once the funds are fully released, the commission will be in a position to conduct a credible and technology-driven census.
