the list of all-time greats without a World Cup has shifted a bit after the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Lionel Messi is no longer on it. He captained Argentina to victory in 2022, finally completing football. That leaves players like Johan Cruyff, Ferenc Puskás, George Best, Alfredo Di Stéfano, and Eusébio still regarded as the biggest legends who never won it.
Cruyff took the Netherlands to the 1974 final, Puskás starred for Hungary in 1954, and Eusébio dragged Portugal to 3rd place in 1966. Best never qualified with Northern Ireland, and Di Stéfano played in an era when Argentina and Spain both missed out.
From the modern era, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Robert Lewandowski remain on the list. Ronaldo played in his 6th World Cup in 2026 but Portugal fell short again. Lewandowski led Poland in 2022 and 2026 but didn’t get past the group and Round of 16. Zlatan retired before 2026 and never made it past the quarterfinals with Sweden.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico, produced new champions, but for these icons the trophy still stayed out of reach. It shows how much the World Cup depends on timing and team. Club success, Ballons d’Or, and records don’t guarantee it.
