The Delta State Police Command has made major arrests following a targeted operation against cult activities across the state.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit stormed a suspected criminal hideout in Issele-Uku. During the raid, 7 persons believed to be members of the Maphite confraternity were apprehended.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, initial questioning revealed that the suspects admitted to belonging to the Maphite group, which has been linked to disturbances in Issele-Uku and nearby communities. Items recovered from the scene included one double-barreled firearm with 7 live cartridges, a cutlass, 7 Android phones, and a Maphite beret.
Police say these items will form part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation. In a separate operation in Abraka, another suspect identified as Wale Morakinyo was picked up during an aborted meeting of suspected criminals along Omoni Road.
A search of his bag yielded two locally made pistols and 4 live cartridges. All 8 suspects are currently in custody while the command intensifies efforts to track down other members of the gang still at large.
