The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the results of a comprehensive forensic and cybersecurity probe concerning claims that its Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, operated a fictitious account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to disseminate partisan content.
The investigation concluded that the Chairman has no connection to the account in question and has never maintained any personal presence on the platform.
INEC described the circulating posts as entirely fabricated and part of a deliberate, coordinated disinformation effort aimed at undermining the Commission’s integrity and impartiality.
The probe confirmed that Professor Amupitan maintains a strictly non-partisan stance in both his professional and private capacities, consistent with the requirements of his office.
The Commission emphasised that such impersonation tactics are increasingly employed by cybercriminals to mislead the public and engage in fraudulent activities.
INEC has reiterated its commitment to neutrality and has indicated that it is collaborating with relevant security and law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the impersonation and associated misinformation campaign.
The Commission urged members of the public to disregard the false narratives and to exercise caution when encountering unverified social media content purporting to represent its leadership.
