Abia State Governor Alex Otti Signs Legislation to Establish Rehabilitation Centre for Survivors of Rape, Gender-Based Violence, and Human Trafficking

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed into law a bill establishing a dedicated rehabilitation centre for survivors of rape, domestic violence, defilement, and human trafficking.

The legislation aims to provide a safe and supportive environment where victims can access comprehensive assistance, including psychosocial support, medical care, legal aid, and rehabilitation services.

This initiative represents a significant step in strengthening institutional responses to gender-based violence within the state. The new centre is designed to offer holistic care under one roof, reducing the additional trauma often experienced by survivors when navigating multiple agencies for help.

It will facilitate emergency medical treatment, forensic examinations, counselling, and referrals to appropriate shelters and social services. By institutionalising these support mechanisms, the law seeks to improve prosecution of perpetrators while ensuring survivors receive timely and confidential assistance.

Governor Otti’s approval of the legislation underscores the state government’s commitment to combating gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable citizens.

The centre is expected to enhance prevention efforts, promote public awareness, and contribute to a safer environment for women and children in Abia State. This development aligns with broader national and international standards for victim-centred approaches to addressing sexual and gender-based violence.
