The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is confronting a deepening internal leadership crisis centred on the status of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, its embattled National Secretary.
Anyanwu has filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal, contesting a January 2026 judgment of the Federal Capital Territory High Court that upheld his recommended expulsion from the party.
The appeal, submitted on 10 April 2026, argues that the lower court erred in law and seeks to set aside the ruling affirming the decision of the party’s disciplinary committee. This development has heightened tensions within the already divided PDP, particularly between rival factions.
One camp, associated with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the subsisting court judgment and requested the withdrawal of Anyanwu’s recognition as National Secretary.
Meanwhile, concerns have emerged that an unfavourable outcome for Anyanwu could create a leadership vacuum, prompting zonal chairmen to consider assuming interim control of the party’s affairs.
The protracted dispute continues to undermine the opposition party’s cohesion at a critical period.
Legal proceedings are expected to determine the legitimacy of key actions taken under Anyanwu’s tenure, including conventions and administrative decisions.
Stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation, as the resolution of this matter will significantly influence the PDP’s stability and preparedness ahead of future electoral engagements.
