Tragic Death of Brazilian Tourist Juliana Marins on Mount Rinjani

Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian publicist and solo traveler from Niterói, fell hundreds of meters down a steep cliff face while participating in a guided hike near the crater of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the Indonesian island of Lombok, on 21 June 2025.

She had paused to rest due to fatigue during the ascent and subsequently slipped from the trail.

Initial observations from drone footage and rescuers indicated that she survived the fall, as she was seen moving and calling for help while stranded in highly precarious terrain.

Rescue operations encountered repeated delays caused by dense fog, landslides, and the extremely rugged and unstable volcanic landscape.

Over the ensuing four days, Marins remained isolated in the remote location, with no confirmed access to food, water, or shelter. Search teams persisted with aerial and specialized ground efforts despite the challenging conditions.

Her body was recovered on 24 June 2025. An official autopsy determined that she died from severe injuries, including multiple fractures and internal bleeding resulting from blunt force trauma sustained in the initial fall.

Forensic findings established that her death occurred relatively soon after the incident due to the extent of her injuries, rather than from prolonged exposure or environmental factors.
